San Cristobal Island quickly became a highlight for my wife and me during our trip to the Galapagos. It’s the second-largest island in population, yet it feels wonderfully untouched in many places. We spent our days taking in stunning views, surfing gentle waves, and snorkeling in waters filled with vibrant sea life. One of our favorite moments was relaxing on the beach alongside the playful sea lions—truly unforgettable.
We stayed in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, a charming fishing town and the island’s capital. Each evening, we’d explore the streets, enjoy local food, and catch the sunset. It was the perfect mix of adventure and tranquility.
How to Get to San Cristobal Island
San Cristobal, the easternmost island in the Galapagos, was one of the most memorable stops for my wife and me. We decided to stay a few nights in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, where we had the chance to explore the local sights during the day and soak in the town’s laid-back vibe in the evenings. It was the perfect balance of adventure and relaxation, but we noticed some travelers opted for a cruise that included a stop on the island—a great choice if you want to explore more of the archipelago.
Getting to San Cristobal was surprisingly easy. We flew in from Guayaquil, and the quick flight made the journey smooth and stress-free. Flights from Quito are also available, with Aerogal, Tame, and LAN offering regular service. Once we arrived, the island felt incredibly accessible, but if you’re already in the Galapagos, you can catch a regular speed boat from Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island. We took this route later in our trip, and the boat ride itself was a bit of an adventure, with stunning views of the islands along the way!
Getting Around San Cristobal Island
Taxis are plentiful in San Cristobal, and my wife and I found them incredibly convenient during our stay. The short five-minute ride from the airport to Puerto Baquerizo Moreno cost us just about a dollar—a pleasant surprise after landing!
Once in town, we realized that most places are easily walkable, which made exploring the local area on foot an enjoyable part of our day. For longer trips, like heading up into the mountains or visiting Puerto Chino on the other side of the island, we took a cab. Some travelers prefer biking for these routes, and we saw plenty of cyclists making their way across the island. If we had more time, we might’ve rented bikes ourselves for a slower, more scenic ride.
Puerto Baquerizo Moreno
Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, the heart of the Galapagos Islands‘ administration, was where my wife and I spent much of our time on San Cristobal. Despite its role as the administrative center, the town has a charming, laid-back vibe. The streets are lined with a mix of government buildings, cozy restaurants, small hotels, and airline offices, making it easy to find everything we needed.
Every day, we watched as tours and ships came and went from the harbor, bringing a constant flow of visitors. There’s a small but sufficient selection of shops and services catering to the needs of travelers, and we never felt like we were missing out on anything during our stay. Whether we were grabbing a bite to eat or just strolling through town, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno felt like the perfect base for exploring the island.
What to Do on San Cristobal Island
The waves are at their prime during the warm-wet season (December to February), which we heard is the best time to surf without needing a wetsuit. My wife and I visited just outside of this season, so we had our wetsuits on, but it was still an amazing experience. We also learned that Tongo Reef, located just west of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, is one of the top spots for surfing. If you’re like us and don’t travel with your own gear, no worries—local vacation agencies make it easy to rent surfboards, so you’re all set for a day on the waves.
25 Things To Do on San Cristobal Island
There are so many incredible sites to explore on San Cristobal Island, and my wife and I barely scratched the surface during our visit.
San Cristobal Galapagos Beaches
Playa Mann
Playa Mann Beach quickly became one of our favorite spots during our time on San Cristobal. Just a short walk from town, it’s a perfect place to relax and socialize with the island’s friendly sea lions. There were moments when it felt like there were more sea lions than people, and it was such a fun, unique experience to share the beach with them.
Getting to Playa Mann is super easy—it’s right off the main road, and you follow the same route as the San Cristobal Interpretation Center. The walk took us about 20 minutes, but it was well worth it, especially with the reward of a stunning sunset over the water. If you’re looking for a great spot close to Puerto Baquerizo Moreno to unwind and catch a breathtaking sunset, Playa Mann is a must!
Manglesito Beach
Manglesito Beach on San Cristobal’s northern shore was one of the most unforgettable stops for my wife and me during our day trip to Kicker Rock. This beach is a paradise for swimming, surfing, and snorkeling, with its crystal-clear waters teeming with marine life. We were amazed to spot sea lions, rays, and even sea turtles swimming gracefully in the shallow waters. The highlight for us, though, was the colorful schools of reef fish that surrounded us as we snorkeled—it felt like we were swimming in an aquarium. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of small sharks gliding through the water, adding to the thrill of the experience. Manglesito Beach is a must for nature lovers!
Puerto Chino Beach
To reach the pristine sands of Puerto Chino Beach, my wife and I followed a scenic route through a vast cactus grove—a walk that felt like we were stepping into a different world. At the end of the road from El Junco Lagoon, we arrived at Puerto Chino, a spot known for its lone beach break, making it a popular destination for beginner surfers. We saw several people getting surf lessons while we relaxed on the shore.
The area is teeming with wildlife. We were lucky enough to spot sea lions lounging on the beach, while blue-footed boobies, Galapagos finches, mockingbirds, and bright yellow warblers fluttered nearby. For the best views of the beach and its surroundings, we followed the narrow cliff trail, which offered breathtaking panoramas. Puerto Chino was a peaceful escape and a must-see for anyone visiting San Cristobal.
Punta Carola Beach
Punta Carola quickly became one of the most thrilling spots for us during our stay on San Cristobal, especially for surfers. Known for its powerful waves that can exceed 10 feet during high tide, this beach offers something for surfers of all skill levels. My wife and I watched in awe as beginners took on the left reef break, perfect for those just starting out, while more experienced surfers tackled the right point break, a challenge fit for intermediate and advanced surfers.
Reaching Punta Carola is easy, too—it’s on the same circular route that leads to Cerro Tijeretas (Frigate Bird Hill) from town. Even if you’re not surfing, the beach is worth the visit for its beautiful views and laid-back vibe.
Puerto Grande
Puerto Grande, situated on the northern shore opposite Kicker Rock, was another peaceful spot my wife and I visited during our time on San Cristobal. It’s a favorite among locals, especially on weekends when families come to swim and relax. The calm waters make it perfect for a refreshing dip. We found it accessible by boat, but many visitors also kayak there from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, which adds a bit of adventure to the journey. Puerto Grande’s laid-back atmosphere and stunning location made it one of our favorite hidden gems on the island.
Playa Baquerizo
One of the most memorable experiences for my wife and me was the hour-long walk to Playa Baquerizo, an off-the-beaten-path beach that felt like a hidden gem. The trail, a bit overgrown and rugged, added to the sense of adventure. But the reward was absolutely worth it—the beach was filled with sea lions, and watching them up close in their natural habitat was truly a highlight of our trip.
To reach Playa Baquerizo, we headed out of town toward Las Tijeretas and followed the cliffside trail before descending to the beach. The peacefulness of this secluded spot and the company of the playful sea lions made it feel like we had discovered a secret corner of San Cristobal.
Tongo Reef
Tongo Reef was an unforgettable spot for surfing during our time on San Cristobal, especially for those seeking a challenge. My wife and I aren’t experts, but we were excited to watch the more experienced surfers tackle the impressive waves. At high tide, the waves can reach over six feet, creating a thrilling atmosphere. There are three take-off zones to reach the break—Bajito and Medio are perfect for beginners and intermediate surfers like us, while Pico offers the biggest waves for advanced surfers looking to push their limits. Watching the pros navigate Pico was exhilarating!
Ochoa Beach
Ochoa Beach, tucked away on San Cristobal’s northwestern side, was one of the most picturesque spots we visited. Its horseshoe-shaped bay, with white sand beaches and volcanic outcrops, made it feel like a postcard come to life. My wife and I spent time just soaking in the beauty of the tranquil lagoon, surrounded by wildlife. Galapagos sea lions lounged on the shore, while blue-footed boobies and pelicans soared above. We were also fascinated by the colorful sally lightfoot crabs scurrying across the rocks, and herons wading nearby added to the peaceful vibe.
We reached Ochoa Beach via a private tour, but kayaking is another great option for getting there. It’s a secluded, serene spot, perfect for nature lovers like us!
San Cristobal Island Day Tours
Tour 360º
One of my favorite parts of our Galapagos vacation was the San Cristobal 360º tour. As the name suggests, the expedition takes you on a full circle around San Cristobal Island, giving us the chance to see every side of the island’s diverse landscapes and wildlife. It was incredible to witness the island from different angles, each offering its own unique beauty. This tour truly made us appreciate the full scope of San Cristobal’s natural wonders, and it’s an experience I highly recommend for anyone visiting the island!
Española Island
Española Island, the southernmost and one of the oldest islands in the Galapagos, was a highlight of our trip. It’s a must-visit, especially if you’re a bird lover like us. The island is famous for its population of waved albatrosses and blue-footed boobies. We were lucky enough to visit during the prime season, between April and December, when all the waved albatrosses were nesting. The island was covered in adorable, fluffy chicks, and it was such a special sight to witness. Española’s natural beauty and incredible wildlife made it one of the most memorable stops of our Galapagos adventure!
Isla Lobos
Isla Lobos, though small and relatively flat, was one of those hidden gems that my wife and I didn’t expect to enjoy as much as we did. It’s not the most famous stop on tour itineraries, but its simplicity and charm make it a worthwhile visit. The island, or more accurately, islet, gets its name from the sea lions that call it home, and sure enough, we spotted plenty of them during our visit. The white sand beaches, though understated compared to some other spots, had a peaceful beauty to them. It’s a great place for a quiet, intimate encounter with Galapagos wildlife.
San Cristobal Coastal Sites
Cerro Brujo (Witch Hill)
Cerro Brujo, or “Witch Hill,” was one of the most breathtaking spots we visited on San Cristobal. The stretch of white sand was absolutely stunning, and it was easy to see why sea lions and Sally Lightfoot crabs love to gather there. As my wife and I waded into the shallow waters, we were lucky enough to spot Galapagos rays gliding by and even caught a glimpse of a few marine turtles. The small cliff near the beach, which gives Cerro Brujo its name, added to the dramatic beauty of the area. We reached this magical spot as part of our Galapagos cruise, and it’s definitely a must-see on any itinerary.
Punta Pitt (Pitt Point)
Punta Pitt, on San Cristobal’s northeast coast, was an absolute highlight for my wife and me. It’s the only place in the entire Galapagos where you can see all three types of Galapagos boobies—red-footed, blue-footed, and Nazca—together in one spot. We visited as part of a day tour, and the sight of these iconic birds in their natural habitat was unforgettable. The landscape at Punta Pitt is rugged and beautiful, making it the perfect backdrop for observing these unique creatures. Whether you’re on a day tour or a cruise, this spot is a must for bird lovers!
La Loberia
San Cristobal Interpretation Center
The San Cristobal Interpretation Center, located just north of town and accessible via a scenic boardwalk, was one of the first places my wife and I visited. It’s a must-stop for anyone exploring San Cristobal, and the Galapagos National Park even requires all ship passengers to spend some time there.
The center’s educational displays added so much context to our trip, helping us appreciate the islands even more. We learned about the volcanic origins of the archipelago, the incredible biodiversity, and the early human history of San Cristobal. The various sections made it easy to dive into each topic, and by the time we left, we felt more connected to the islands and their unique story. It’s a great way to start your Galapagos adventure!
Cerro Tijeretas (Frigate Bird Hill)
The 3.5km circular route up to Cerro Tijeretas from Playa Mann Beach was one of the best hikes we did on San Cristobal. My wife and I loved the journey, and the views from the top lookout point were absolutely breathtaking. Once at the top, we were rewarded with panoramic vistas and the incredible sight of two kinds of Frigate birds—Great and Magnificent—breeding together. It was a unique moment to witness these birds in such close proximity.
After enjoying the views, we made our way down to the bay, where we had an unforgettable snorkeling experience with playful sea lions. The combination of hiking, wildlife, and snorkeling made it a perfect day on the island!
San Cristobal Diving Sites
The Kicker Rock (Leon Dormido)
Kicker Rock was hands down one of the most incredible diving and snorkeling spots we visited in the Galapagos. My wife and I were amazed by the towering rock formations, which rise dramatically from the ocean. Beneath the surface, the marine life was even more spectacular. As we snorkeled, we swam alongside sea turtles, rays, and colorful schools of fish. If you’re lucky, you might even spot some reef sharks gliding through the water. The sheer diversity of marine life made it an unforgettable experience, and it’s a must-visit for anyone who loves diving or snorkeling!
At Kicker Rock, a narrow water channel divides two towering volcanic boulders, creating an underwater paradise for marine life. This channel was one of the most exciting spots we explored. My wife and I were thrilled by the chance to see sharks, rays, sea lions, and a vibrant array of reef fish as we snorkeled.
Five Fingers
Five Fingers, an intermediate reef dive just offshore from Wreck Bay in front of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, was one of the most thrilling underwater spots my wife and I visited. The dive reaches depths of around 18 meters, making it perfect for those looking for a bit of a challenge. As we descended, we were surrounded by vibrant schools of multicolored fish, and the sight of white-tipped and Galapagos sharks gliding by was absolutely exhilarating. Sea turtles and rays also made frequent appearances, adding to the unforgettable marine life experience. If you’re a diver seeking adventure, Five Fingers is a must!
Caragua
Caragua is a unique and rare wreck site in the Galapagos, and it was a fascinating spot for my wife and me to explore. The wreckage of a WWI German cargo ship, dating back over 100 years, has transformed into a thriving underwater ecosystem. As we dove around the site, we were mesmerized by the vibrant marine life. Stingrays glided gracefully, while green sea turtles, sea lions, and even lobster and octopi made appearances. The wreck is now teeming with various fish species, making it a must-see for anyone interested in both history and marine exploration.
San Cristobal Highlands
Galapaguera Tortoise Breeding Center (Cerro Colorado)
El Junco Lake
El Junco Lagoon, a crater lake formed by an extinct volcano, offers one of the most breathtaking views on San Cristobal. Standing on the hill above the lagoon, I could take in a panoramic vista that stretched across the entire island—especially clear on sunny days. The area around the lagoon is a haven for birdwatchers, with Frigate birds gliding above and Mockingbirds, Cattle Egrets, and Galapagos Finches making their homes around the water. The peacefulness of the lagoon, combined with its sweeping views and rich birdlife, made it one of my favorite spots to take in the island’s beauty.
El Progresso Town
There are even more things to do in the Galapagos Islands.

While there are a few other villages on the island, they’re mostly rural communities with limited amenities.

Where to Eat on San Cristobal Island
Food and drinks in San Cristobal are generally more affordable compared to Santa Cruz Island, although there’s a bit less variety. Even so, you should still be able to find whatever you need in terms of meals and snacks.
We have listed a few places to try in San Cristobal below:
San Jose Parrilladas
At first glance, this restaurant might not catch your eye, and I can understand why it doesn’t seem to draw in large crowds. But don’t let appearances fool you—it’s absolutely worth a visit once you take a look at their menu. It’s a fantastic outdoor spot with a laid-back atmosphere, and the way they grill seafood here is exceptional. The freshness and smoky flavors were a highlight for me, making it one of those hidden gems that you’ll be glad you tried.
Maui Bar and Restaurant
This restaurant is a favorite among both travelers and locals, offering a relaxed and inviting atmosphere that’s perfect for unwinding after a long day of exploring. While the menu is predominantly seafood-based, there are plenty of vegetarian and other cuisine options to cater to different tastes. One of the highlights is their selection of unique drinks, crafted by friendly bartenders who are always ready with a recommendation. It’s a great spot to enjoy good food, drinks, and laid-back vibes.
El Descanso Marinero
Our tour guide recommended this restaurant, and it was definitely worth the visit. The place is known for serving hearty main courses, all prepared on sizzling cast iron skillets. When I ordered the grilled fish, I was surprised at how generous the portion was—easily double the size of any other fish dish I’d had in Ecuador. And the taste? Absolutely fantastic. If you’re looking for a place that doesn’t skimp on flavor or portions, this restaurant is a must-try.
Calypso
Mary’s Cupcakes and Coffee
This hidden gem doesn’t have much of an online presence, just like my other favorite budget-friendly spots on the island, but it’s not hard to find. Located right on the beach, it’s the perfect place to start your day with an affordable breakfast and a good cup of coffee. The laid-back atmosphere and beachfront location make it a great spot to relax and enjoy a simple meal while taking in the view.
Muyu
Muyu is a must-visit dining spot for tourists, and for good reason. It’s one of the pioneers of the sea and farm-to-table concept on the island, focusing mainly on fresh seafood dishes. Their set lunches and specialty tasting menus offer a great way to experience the best of what they have to offer, and they also serve a delicious breakfast. While the prices are a bit on the higher side, the quality of the food and the unique dining experience make it worth it for a special night out. If you’re looking to treat yourself, Muyu is a great choice.
Bottom Line
San Cristobal Island in the Galapagos is a must-see destination! Spending a few days here allows you to explore its stunning white-sand beaches, unique upland ecosystems, and incredible diving spots. With so much to do and so much wildlife to experience, this island is sure to leave you captivated.
San Cristobal is also the ideal base for adventure activities, offering stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, and, of course, world-class surfing. It’s no wonder this island is one of the most popular in the Galapagos archipelago—there’s truly something for everyone.
