Ecuador Itinerary: 10, 14 And 21 Days

We rented a car for 15 days and drove from the north of Ecuador to the south, through Quito, Otavalo, Baños, Cuenca and Guayaquil, as part of a 30-day trip that also took us to the Galapagos. The 10, 14 and 21 day plans below follow that route, with verified bus times and fares for anyone traveling without a car.

What Visitors Need To Know In October 2026

  • Fees: Interprovincial bus fares rose by about 25 percent from the end of July 2026; the Quito to Cuenca fare is now USD 17.25.
  • Closures: Rain has caused landslides on roads in Cotopaxi province, including the Pujilí to La Maná road, and the Zumbahua to Latacunga road is listed as affected; check the road status before you head to Quilotoa.

How Many Days Do You Need In Ecuador?

Ten days cover Quito and the central Andes, including Cotopaxi, Quilotoa and Baños. Fourteen days let you add Cuenca or the Amazon. Twenty-one days leave room for the Galapagos as well. My wife and I rented a car and explored the Ecuador Mainland, and we visited in September.

How you split the time depends on what you want to see. A traveler working with ten days can stay on the Andes circuit between Quito and Baños. With two weeks, Cuenca becomes an option, and the bus from Quito (Quitumbe) takes 8 to 9 hours and costs USD 17.25 according to the ANT 2026 reference tariff. Flying takes 55 to 60 minutes with LATAM and Avianca, from about USD 80 one way.

For a trip of around three weeks, the Galapagos can be added on top of the mainland route. Our own mainland costs give a sense of the budget: USD 3,400 over two weeks for two people, excluding flights, PCR tests and travel insurance.

We rented a car for 15 days. Total for two over two weeks: USD 3,400, excluding flights, PCR tests and travel insurance.

The route starts with three days in Quito, then Otavalo with the market, Laguna de Cuicocha and Peguche waterfall, a night at a hacienda, and the crater lake at Quilotoa. From Cotopaxi the drive continues to Baños, where three days cover Pailón del Diablo, Machay waterfalls, the swing at the end of the world and a day in the jungle.

Day 12 is the 7-hour drive to Cuenca, followed by the historic center and Cajas National Park before reaching Guayaquil. There, a visit to Malecón 2000 and Parque Seminario ends the mainland trip, and the hotel becomes the place to pack for the Galapagos Islands. Mindo, a small town in the middle of cloud forest, the Amazon, the coast and the Devil's Nose train were left for another time.

10 Days: Quito, Cotopaxi, Quilotoa And Baños

Ten days give you time for Quito, Cotopaxi, Quilotoa and Baños without rushing. Sleep in Quito for the first three nights so your body adjusts to the altitude before any hiking. Base yourself in Latacunga for the crater lake, then finish lower and warmer in Baños, returning to Quito at the end.

10Return to QuitoBus from Baños, about 3.5 hours

A suggested order, not a record of one trip.

The order follows the road. Quito first means acclimatizing at altitude before you exert yourself. Cotopaxi sits about 50 km south of the city, a 1 to 1.5 hour drive on the Pan-American Highway, and the same route continues to Latacunga, about 1.5 hours from Quitumbe for USD 3.09. From Latacunga the Quilotoa bus runs about 2 hours, and Baños follows, 2 to 2.5 hours away, then 3.5 hours back to Quito.

14 Days: Adding Cuenca Or The Amazon

A 14 day trip lets you add four days either to Cuenca or to the Amazon. Cuenca works by a 7 hour direct bus from Baños or a flight of under an hour from Quito, with the Cajas road nearby. The Amazon option starts with a short, cheap bus from Baños to Puyo.

For the Cuenca route, Cooperativa Amazonas runs the Baños to Cuenca leg direct in about 7 hours, with two departures a day around 8:45 and 23:30, and fares of USD 13 to 19 on booking sites. Flying is faster: Quito to Cuenca takes 55 to 60 minutes on LATAM or Avianca, from about USD 80 one way. The bus from Quito's Quitumbe terminal takes 8 to 9 hours and costs USD 17.25 under the ANT 2026 reference tariff. From Cuenca, the bus on to Guayaquil crosses the Cajas road in 3.5 to 4 hours for USD 8 to 11 in 2026.

The Amazon option is simpler on paper. Baños to Puyo takes about 1 hour 20 minutes and costs USD 2.50, with departures at 10:20, 16:00 and 19:20. My wife and I rented a car and explored the Ecuador Mainland, and our own drive from Baños to Cuenca took 7 hours.

21 Days: The Mainland Plus The Galapagos

Split 21 days into 14 on the mainland and 7 to 9 in the Galapagos. Our own mainland trip ended in Guayaquil, where we headed to the hotel to pack for the Galapagos Islands. From Guayaquil or Quito you can fly to Baltra or San Cristóbal, and the Galapagos itinerary and getting there pages give the details.

Our own mainland trip ended in Guayaquil, and we headed to the hotel to pack for the Galapagos Islands. That routing works well with a bus plan: Cuenca to Guayaquil takes 3.5 to 4 hours over the Cajas road and costs USD 8 to 11 in 2026, so the city pairs naturally with a flight out.

LATAM and Avianca fly from both Quito and Guayaquil to Baltra and to San Cristóbal. Guayaquil to Baltra takes about 1 hour 55 minutes; Quito to Baltra runs about 2 hours 10 minutes non-stop. Round-trip economy fares for foreign visitors typically run USD 250 to 500, and Guayaquil is often slightly cheaper. LATAM Ecuador added a Cuenca to Quito to Baltra service from 31 March 2026. For day-by-day planning, see the Galapagos itinerary and the getting there pages.
