Ecuador Amazon Rainforest: Our Experience — Wet, Muddy, and Full of Mosquitoes… But Totally Worth It!

Hola Vida falls near Puyo

While the Galapagos Islands often steal the spotlight on many travelers’ itineraries, the Ecuadorian Amazon is quickly becoming a must-visit destination. This vibrant region boasts some of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet, making an Amazon tour an incredible opportunity for exploration and sustainable travel.

But let’s be honest and not romanticize the Ecuadorian Amazon! While it’s a unique ecosystem filled with countless rare plants and wildlife, be prepared for a lot of mud, wetness, and mosquitoes—some of which can carry yellow fever, so it’s essential to get vaccinated beforehand. The lodges are comfortable enough, but don’t expect the luxury of a 4-star hotel.

This adventure isn’t for everyone; it’s for true explorers who crave new experiences rather than just lounging around. That said, we found the Ecuadorian Amazon to be incredibly unique, and since the country isn’t overly touristy, all the spots we visited were blissfully free from crowds, with only our small group present!

Our adventure in the rainforest was nothing short of exhilarating. From the depths of Yasuni National Park to the charming backpacker hub of Tena, there was an endless array of activities waiting for us in Ecuador’s jungle.

In this post, my wife and I will share our unforgettable experiences in the Amazon rainforest and offer tips to help you plan your upcoming adventure!

An Amazing Rainforest Tour in Tena

Zip-line throughout the forest in Mindo, Ecuador

We rented a car and drove ourselves, our excitement bubbling over as we headed for the outskirts of Ecuador’s lush Amazon Rainforest. The anticipation of the adventure ahead felt almost electric. After a four-hour drive, the expansive highways gradually transformed into narrow, winding gravel roads that twisted through an endless sea of green.

Once we arrived, we were all set, having booked our tour online in advance to fully immerse ourselves in the rainforest experience. I can highly recommend this tour!

Surrounded by dense forests, we felt a bit isolated, but the occasional road signs and small buildings kept us grounded. As we approached the small village of Tena, we realized it was the primary hub for those living deeper within the thick jungle. The vibrant energy of the area was palpable, and before long, we found ourselves speeding away in a 4×4 truck towards our local family hosts in the remote community of Pimilacha.

Pimilacha, meaning “butterfly” in local Quechua, is a charming hamlet that welcomes visitors eager to learn about their way of life. It was heartwarming to see how the Quechua culture and customs are preserved here. Our days were filled with interactions with our host family, who generously shared their knowledge about the Amazon Jungle and its rich biodiversity.

One of the most profound experiences we had was a unique healing ceremony led by a shaman, where we participated in a ritual that connected us to the spiritual essence of the rainforest. It was an incredible moment that left a lasting impression on both of us.

Of all the activities we experienced, rafting on the Jatunyacu River stood out as a highlight.

The thrill of navigating the rapids was an adrenaline rush like no other! If you’re an adventure seeker like us, be sure to ask your tour operator to include a rafting experience in your itinerary—it’s an absolute must!

Amazon Tours in Ecuador

Yasuni Tours

Yasuni National Park tours are among the priciest options in Ecuador, but they offer an unparalleled experience in one of the most remote and protected sections of the Amazon rainforest. The lodges here are charming and provide an incredible opportunity to immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty along the Ecuador Amazon River.

My wife and I snorkelling at Pinzon Island Galapagos

Planning trip to Galapagos Islands?

My wife and I spent two weeks on these magnificent islands, visited nearly every possible tour, and explored as much as we could. I shared all the important details in my comprehensive Galapagos Islands Travel Guide, where I cover everything you need to know about planning a trip to the Galapagos.

Galapagos Islands travel might surprise you with extra fees to enter the islands, the complicated logistics between islands, booking tours, and knowing which spots are free to explore and which ones are not. I’ve covered it all in this Galapagos Travel Guide.

Also, if you’re planning a trip to the Galapagos, make sure to use my link for discounted hotel prices via Booking.com. It really helps support my blog!

For those seeking a more adventurous approach, there are popular camping and kayaking tours available in Yasuni. These options allow you to get even closer to nature and explore more of the jungle. It’s not just about the typical lodge experience; it’s about embarking on a fantastic journey that truly connects you with the environment around you. We found these tours to be both exhilarating and eye-opening, offering a unique perspective on the rich biodiversity of the area.

Cuyabeno Tours

Visiting Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve with Ecuadorian guide

Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve tours are often a more budget-friendly alternative to those in Yasuni. These tours offer a fantastic opportunity for wildlife interactions, allowing you to experience the vibrant ecosystem of the Amazon without breaking the bank.

Multi-day tours generally cost around $100 per day, all-inclusive, although prices can vary depending on the type of accommodation you choose. We found Cuyabeno to be an excellent option for travelers looking to explore the jungle while keeping costs manageable, all while enjoying the incredible wildlife and stunning scenery that the reserve has to offer.

Amazon eco-lodges in Ecuador

We were able to do this tour a few years ago, and we stayed at the Tapir Lodge. It was also a fun experience!

Tena Tours

Tena jungle excursions are often the best choice for budget travel in the Amazon, as it serves as the most accessible jumping-off point right on the edge of the forest. During our trip, we found some fantastic Ecuador rainforest tours available at low costs, making it easy to dive into the adventure without stretching our budget!

While the trips from Tena may not take you deep into the inner Amazon and you might not encounter the same array of species as in Yasuni or Cuyabeno, I can assure you that my experience was still incredible. We saw plenty of wildlife, from colorful birds to playful monkeys, and each moment was filled with excitement and discovery. Tena proved to be a wonderful gateway to the wonders of the Amazon!

Rafting Tours

Tena is also a popular spot for rafting in the Amazon, and I can see why! Alongside the typical nature and wildlife trips, rafting stands out as one of Ecuador’s most exhilarating Amazon excursions.

We had an unforgettable experience as we prepared to tackle the rapids. Rafting excursions from Tena cater to various skill levels, so even first-timers like us can jump right in and enjoy the thrill. What impressed me the most was the presence of safety kayaks accompanying us, ensuring that everyone stayed safe while navigating the exhilarating waters. It added a layer of reassurance, allowing us to fully embrace the adventure!

Tips For Amazon Jungle Visitors

  • The months with the most rain in the Ecuador Amazon Basin are March, April, May, and June. The dry season lasts from July to December.
  • Some species may be more difficult to find during the wet season.
  • There will be little to no tourist traffic in the area. Amazon lodges, activities, and journeys are widely dispersed.
  • Long jungle hikes shouldn’t be done alone because most pathways are poorly signposted. If you wish to go on a further excursion, ask the local you’re staying with, who would be delighted to show you more of their home.
  • Never go out at night without a flashlight. Because you are in a jungle, you’ll never know what you might run into.
  • Staying at a licensed lodge with proper visitor facilities is best, so others know where you are.
  • Pack accordingly to the weather, and do not forget to bring your essentials.

Final Thoughts

An Ecuador Amazon Jungle Tour is genuinely a one-of-a-kind experience that my wife and I believe everyone should try at least once in their lives. Keeping an open mind was essential for us, especially as we immersed ourselves in the local communities.

Our guides were incredible—many were members of the indigenous groups we were visiting, and their passion for sharing their culture and traditions was infectious. It was fascinating to see how they had taken the initiative to develop sustainable eco-lodges that provided authentic experiences while respecting their heritage.

During our time there, we learned so much about their way of life, their connection to the land, and their commitment to preserving their environment. While this journey might not fit the mold of a typical vacation, the hidden gems we discovered made every moment worthwhile. Engaging with the locals and hearing their stories added a layer of depth to our adventure that we’ll always cherish. It was truly an unforgettable part of our Ecuador trip!

Planning trip to Ecuador?

My wife and I rented a car for 15 days and traveled from the northern part of Ecuador to the south, visiting amazing cities like Quito, Otavalo, Baños, Cuenca, and Guayaquil. Along the way, we explored iconic places such as Cotopaxi National Park, Quilotoa Lake, and many more breathtaking destinations.

Not many blogs cover traveling in Ecuador in detail, so I spent nearly three weeks creating this comprehensive Ecuador travel guide based on our trip. It’s packed with everything you need to know, and honestly, I consider it the best free travel guide about Ecuador out there.
