Puyo, known as the “gateway to the Amazon,” is a city on Ecuador’s mainland that serves as a starting point for exploring the rainforest. While the city itself may not be particularly remarkable, it’s an excellent base for your Amazonian adventures.
While there are plenty of options for booking organized tours, I’m excited to share a unique experience you can enjoy entirely on your own: our visit to Finca Mirador Indichuris. This was a highlight of our trip, offering a glimpse into the beauty of the Amazon without needing a guided tour.

How to Get to Mirador Indichuris
Indichuris is about 45 minutes southeast of Puyo and may be reached by car, bus, or cab. We drove all the way from Banos, it took us 2 hours to get there.
By Car
If you’re heading to Finca Mirador Indichuris by car, take Highway 45 south from Puyo for about 16 kilometers. Keep an eye out for a sign marked “Nuevo Mundo” pointing to the right—that’s your turn. From there, you’ll drive another 13.5 kilometers along a scenic road. The mirador will be on your left side.
It’s crucial to stay alert for the sign pointing toward Indichuris when you’re around 15 kilometers out from Puyo, or you might miss it. Once you’re on the right road, the mirador is easy to spot.
If you accidentally drive too far past Indichuris, you’ll eventually reach the banks of the Pastaza River, where the road ends. In that case, just turn back, and you’ll quickly find your way to the mirador.
By Taxi
Getting to Mirador Indichuris is quite easy, even if you don’t have a car. Taking a taxi is the fastest option, but it can be a bit pricey—a ride from Puyo will set you back around $20.
If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, the mirador is conveniently accessible by bus. Head to the small terminal located one block away from Mercado Mariscal in Puyo. Buses to Pomona depart frequently throughout the day, but it’s always a good idea to check the schedule in advance.
The bus ride takes about 45 minutes and costs just $0.75. Simply let the driver know you’d like to get off at Mirador Indichuris. Before setting off, ask the driver or someone at the station about the return bus schedule. The options can be limited, but it’s a great way to save money if you’re traveling on a budget.
All About Finca Mirador Indichuris
Finca Mirador Indichuris is perched 1,000 meters high, offering one of the most breathtaking views in Ecuador. From here, you can marvel at the stunning confluence of the Puyo and Pastaza rivers.
The mirador itself was built by the Indichuris tribe, whose name translates to “Children of the Sun.” The Indichuris are one of the few remaining indigenous communities in the Ecuadorian Amazon. They carry on a rich tradition, descending from a long line of shamans who have used medicinal herbs from the jungle to heal people for centuries.
Through this mirador and the culture they are nurturing around it, the Indichuris tribe warmly welcomes tourists to experience their traditions and appreciate the beauty of their land. It’s more than just a scenic viewpoint—it’s a place deeply rooted in history and culture.
Enjoying the Magnificent Views from Mirador Indichuris
As the name Mirador suggests, this lookout sits atop a hill, offering a panoramic view of the lush forest and the point where the Puyo and Pastaza rivers meet.
Upon arrival, we were immediately drawn to the intriguing caves near the entrance, each with faces etched around their openings. We spent some time exploring these fascinating caverns and found a few great spots for photos.
Scattered around the area are a few rustic wooden structures, including an information center where you can buy drinks and snacks. If you’re looking to extend your stay, they also offer cozy cabañas for overnight guests.
From the entrance, it’s just a short climb up to the Mirador. Once at the top, we joined other visitors from around the world, all taking in the stunning scenery. It’s easy to see why so many make the journey here—the views are truly unforgettable.
At times, the viewpoint can get quite busy as more visitors arrive. If you find it crowded, you might need to wait your turn to walk over the plank and capture those spectacular views with your camera.
Thankfully, there’s another wooden structure nearby with a bar and several hammocks. While waiting for your turn, you can relax in a hammock, sip on a refreshing drink, and simply enjoy the laid-back atmosphere. It’s the perfect spot to unwind while taking in the serene beauty of the Amazon.
If you want a more exciting adventure, there is also a swing there where you can hop on to and appreciate the scene from a higher vantage point.
Overnight Stay at the Mirador Indichurris
If you’d like to extend your stay at Finca Mirador Indichuris, it’s possible to book one of their rustic cabañas. The cost is quite affordable, at $10 per person for one night.
The cabañas have a dormitory-style setup, with three to six beds in each. They’re quite simple, equipped with just beds covered by mosquito nets and a small table. The windows are glassless, leaving the space open to the fresh air and jungle sounds—a truly immersive experience!
While there is a kitchen on-site where meals can be prepared for you, this service is only available with advance notice. So, if you’d like to have breakfast, lunch, or dinner cooked for you, be sure to request it ahead of time. Alternatively, you can bring your own food if you prefer to self-cater during your stay.
Bottom Line

The stunning views, rich cultural experiences, and the option to stay overnight make it an ideal spot for those looking to explore the beauty of the Amazon without straying too far from the city.
